Ledger Nano S 2019 Review

Ledger Company

Ledger was founded in 2014, it is one of the biggest hardware wallet companies around today. Ledger specializes in developing products and services to safeguard cryptocurrency assets. In this Ledger Nano S 2019 Review i will analyse the pros and cons of the Ledger Nano S Hardware Wallet.

Ledger Wallet

Ledger hardware wallets are multi currency wallets that are used to store private keys for cryptocurrencies offline. There are three hardware wallets in operation: Ledger Nano S, Ledger Blue and Ledger Nano X. These wallets support several types of cryptocurrencies. The list includes major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Hardware wallets are a type of online storage. They are device based which means that they use storage mechanisms such as USB to store private keys, which makes it very difficult for hackers to access the key.

Ledger Nano S

Ledger Nano S is a hardware wallet. The Nano S is the most popular cryptocurrency hardware wallet( more than 1.5 million sold to date). This wallet is used for the storage and transactions of popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum and other popular coins such as Zcash, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash. This year Ledger has released a new model called the Ledger Nano X. However the Nano S is not out dated, it is still one of the most secure and affordable options to store cryptocurrencies. It will cost you approximately $59,in my view money well spent to protect your investment.

What Does it Do?

Apart from taking your cryptocurrencies offline, the Ledger Nano S enables you to send and receive payments, manage multiple addresses for each currency and enables you to easily keep check your accounts.

Device Design

The Ledger comes with a handy and easy to use interface. There is a screen and two navigation buttons on the top of the device. These two buttons allows you to make selections, input recovery phrases and to access menus. Entering PINS and recovery phrases make it slightly tedious using two buttons but Ledger OS guides you through the setup of your device. It is also easy to connect your Ledger to the computer by using the provided micro USB cable.

  • Ease of use…4/5
  • Hardware design…3.5/5

Security Features

The Nano S and X are the only cryptocurrency hardware wallets to receive CSPN(First Level Certificate), issued by the National Agency for Information Systems Security. Users can also protect their funds using a PIN code and a pass phrase. Let’s assume that you are threatened to unlock your ledger, you can give them the PIN code to access wallets with fewer funds. Meanwhile, the majority of your crypto are contained in a pass phrase protected wallet. Even if your computer is compromised or hacked, the Ledger will still keep your cryptocurrencies safe. Nano S scored full marks on security, even before the firmware update. This shows that the scores are well-deserved.

  • Security Rating…5/5

Why Use a Hardware Wallet?

With traditional currencies the user is the most important person, however cryptocurrencies don’t care about the physical person, but rather the private key associated with the wallet. Anyone who has access to this key can send funds, and cryptocurrency transactions cannot be reversed. This is why you must keep the key safe. Hardware wallets can protect you against these things. You can store the private key on the device itself.

Supported Cryptocurrencies

Ledger Nano S supports more than 1100 different digital assets. Many of the assets supported by Ledger Nano S are not supported by competing hardware wallets like Trezor or Keepkey. The following is a list of some currencies supported:

  • Bitcoin, Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Komodo, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Dash, Dogecoin, Ripple, Zcash, Hello, PoSW, Steathcoin, Straits, Fido U2F, Expanse, Stellar, Ark, BTCp, ZenChash etc.

Despite the variety of supported crypto assets by Ledger, the main drawback is its limited internal memory. It lets you install up to 5 different cryptocurrency wallets. Users will need to remove apps after storing coins, helping you save extra space. The Ledger Nano X solves this issue and allows you to keep as many cryptocurrencies as you like.

What Comes In The Ledger Wallet Package?

Here’s a list of items you will find in the Ledger Nano S box:

  • Ledger Nano S
  • USB Cable
  • Recovery Card
  • Instruction Card
  • Lanyard
  • Key Chain

It is recommended to never buy the Ledger Wallet from anywhere other than the official website.
